Suggest a better descriptionIn mixer bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add egg and vanilla and beat well. Stir together flour and salt and add to bowl; beat only until just combined.
Divide dough in half, and add red food coloring (paste?) to half. Cover and chill dough for 4 hours.
Using a teaspoon of each, roll out two coils about 5-6 inches long. Lay coils next to each and gently twist them together. Form a cane and pinch ends to secure.
Bake at 375 degrees on cookie sheets lined with parchment for 6-9 minutes. Watch carefully so that they do not burn!
Sprinkle with confectioner's sugar when cool.
