Source: From my cousin, Nancy Merrill. This is the recipe
Heat the sugar, molasses, butter, and citron just to boiling. Add water in which soda and salt have been dissolved. Add spices and flour.
Let stand three days or more before baking.
Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Roll thin. Cut in bars or with cookie cutters. Bake at 425 degrees for 7 minutes. The cookies should still be a bit soft. Frost when cool with powdered sugar, milk, & vanilla icing.
This was originally a huge recipe, and these amounts make about 1/4 of Freda's recipe. My cousin added more citron, a total of 1/3 cup, more than needed because she liked it that way.
