Preheat oven to 400. Bring a large saucepan of salted water to boil. Grease a 1 1/2 qt. shallow baking dish.
Snap off tough ends of asparagus, wash.
Add to boiling water. Cover; lower heat simmer for 10 minutes or till lower parts of stalks are fork-tender. Drain; transfer to paper towel to drain further.
Cream sauce; melt 1 T. butter in small saucepan. Stir in flour; cook 1 minute. Gradually stir in the milk. Cook, stirring constantly, till sauce thickens, about 3 minutes. Remove from heat, reserve.
Arrange asparagus in a layer in the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle half the shopped egg; dot with salt and pepper. Arrange another layer with remaining asparagus. Sprinkle center portion with remaining egg. Pour the cream sauce down the middle of casserole. Sprinkle sauce with bread crumbs and cheese. Top uncovered portions of asparagus with remaining 2 tablespoons of butter to prevent drying during baking.
Bake, covered, 400 degrees for 15 minutes. Uncover and bake 2 or 3 minutes more or until top is browned.
