Grandma Watkins' recipe
Soak gelatin in cold water about 5 min. Beat egg yolks slightly in top of double boiler. Blend in 1/4 c. sugar and salt and lemon juice. Cook over hot water stirring constantly until smooth and thickened. Blend in gelatin and strawberries and beat one minute. Cool and chill in refrigerator until thick enough to barely hold its' shape. Beat until smooth. Make a stiff merengue by beating egg whites with cream of tartar 'til it holds a point; gradually beat in sugar until stiff and glossy. Fold in with strawberry mixture and put in baked 9" pie shell. Chill. Top with sliced strawberries and whipped cream.
