Suggest a better description1. Heat oven to 350° F.
2. Mix butter, shortening, brown sugar, egg yolk, and vanilla thoroughly.
3. Work in flour and salt until dough holds together.
4. Shape the dough with a teaspoon full into 1-inch balls.
5. Beat egg white until foamy. Dip each ball into egg whites and then roll to cover with nuts.
6. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheet. Press thumb deeply into the center of each ball. Bake 10 minutes or until lightly brown. If necessary, push thumb into the thumbprint. This can be done with a wooden spoon.
7. If jelly is going to be inserted immediately put jelly into the center of each cookie and put back into oven for 2 minutes or until the jelly has been set. Then remove from baking sheet and put on cooling rack to cool. Fill thumbprint with icing if jelly has not already been inserted.
