In large mixer bowl combine sugar, butter, egg and vanilla.
Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until creamy (1 to 2 min.)
Reduce speed to low: add flour, baking powder and baking soda.
Beat until well mixed (1 to 2 min.) By hand , stir in toffee bits.
Shape dough into 1 1/2 in. balls. Roll in sugar. Place 2 in. apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
Flatten with bottom of glass to 2 1/2 in. circles (If glass sticks, dip glass in sugar)
Bake for 11 to 13 min. or until edges just begin to turn light golden brown. (do not overbake) Cool 1 min.: remove from cookie sheet . Sprinkle with additional sugar if desired.
