This is my paternal Aunt Virgina's version of chocolate chip bars. My friends, you are in for a treat. These thick and chewy bars are an irresistible mix of chocolate chip cookie taste and brownie texture. They have been enjoyed by our family for many years and are sure to please!
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Grease a 9- by 13-inch baking dish and set aside.
Mix together the melted butter and both sugars in a large bowl. Add the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla and mix well. In a seperate bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking soda. Fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined. Fold in the chocolate chips. Pour batter into the prepared dish and spread evenly.
Bake at 325 degrees F for about 24 to 28 minutes or until light golden brown, slightly firm to the touch, and edges start pulling away from sides of pan. Cool to room temperature before cutting into bars or squares.
Makes 12 to 20 servings.
(1) Use butter, not margarine, It DOES make a difference. And yes, you can use butter flavored Crisco but in a word (OK, two words) HYDROGENATED OILS... Butter, at least, is a natural product and in moderation won't hurt you.
(2) Do NOT use imitation vanilla.
