Sift flour, baking powder and salt 3 times. Cream shortening and sugar, stir in egg yolks, beat till fluffy. Add vanilla and stir in flour mixture alternately w/milk. (Add nuts if desired) and fold in beaten egg whites. Bake at 340 for 30 minutes.
