Grandmother's (Laura Guyatt) recipe from 1964
Typically I double this recipe to make the prep worthwhile.
Cream together shortening and sugar. Add unbeaten egg and molasses. Sift dry ingredients together and add to creamed mixture. Blend well. Chill dough in freezing compartment.
Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Form into small balls (size of walnut) and roll in sugar. Place on greased cookie sheet.
Bake in oven about 15 minutes. If baking two pans at the same time, just put in one pan on lower shelf and 7 minutes later transfer this pan to upper shelf and put the other pan in. When top pan is done, take out and put the other pan on the top shelf [old recipe, not sure if this alternating is needed with convection ovens]
Its fine to only bake half of the dough and keep the other dough frozen [keeps forever].
Leave the dough in freezer long enough to stiffen to make it easier to work with.
