This is a large recipe but they freeze quite well. The recipe was passed from my Grandma Alice to my Mother who made them often throughout my childhood.
Combine flour and baking powder. Rub butter into flour mixture. Add sugar, spice and eggs (golden syrup if using) along with enough milk to make a stiff dough. Roll out dough to about 1½ cm thickness and cut with biscuit cutter. Place on lightly greased oven trays.
(For ‘rock cake’ style use 1¼ cup milk instead of 2/3 cup milk to make a more moist dough and drop tablespoonfuls of mixture in rough heaps onto lightly greased oven trays.)
Bake in a hot oven 220°C for 10-15 minutes or until lightly golden brown.
