A delicious and warming soup from Dave Lierberman
Heat oil in lg. pot. Sauté onion and garlic until translucent. Add spices and sauté until fragrant. Add tomatoes, chickpeas, broth, and sugar along with salt and pepper. Chickpeas should be just covered with liquid. Add water if necessary. Simmer, then lower heat for 45 minutes. Mash some of the chickpeas in the pot with potato masher. Add spinach and serve when wilted!
