Heat oil in a large soup pot over medium high heat. Cut meat into cubes and brown in the oil.
When meat is uniformly brown add garlic salt, beef broth and barley.
After it comes to a boil, reduce heat to a low simmer and simmer for at least an hour. You may need to simmer longer.
Soup is done when the barley has burst and its starch thickens the broth.
