In the South we call these Yankee Beans because they are different than the beans we normally serve with BBQ (and no insult intended!). But they are delicious with BBQ or anything else - and they are a quick & easy side dish for a party or pot luck.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Drain all beans except pork & beans. Pour the drained beans and the undrained pork & beans into 2 1/2 quart casserole dish with lid. Stir to mix, don't over-stir to avoid breaking the beans. Set aside. Then brown the bacon in a large skillet, it should be very crispy but not burnt. Set aside on paper towel. Cook the onions in the bacon grease until almost translucent over medium heat. Then add the sugar & vinegar to the skillet mixing well. Remove from heat. Pour the onion mixture over the beans and stir to combine being careful not to break up the beans. Cook covered dish in 350 degree oven for one hour. Beans must sit to cool for at least 20 min before serving. Crumble bacon over the top just before serving but do not stir.
If you make this dish ahead of time put the bacon in a ziplock already crumbled so all you have to do is sprinkle it before serving. To reheat microwave about 10 minutes stirring every couple minutes. Or reheat in 350 oven about 25 minutes.
