Makes a wonderful cookie for the holidays.
1. Heat oven to 375?.
2. Cream shortening, butter and sugar together well.
3. Add in egg, vanilla and almond extract. Mix well.
4. Add flour and salt. Mix well.
5. Divide dough in half.
6. Blend red food coloring into one half of the dough.
7. Refrigerate for 15-30 minutes to firm up the dough.
8. Roll 2 tsp of each color dough on a lightly floured board into a rope about 1/2 inch thick.
9. Twist the rope to form a spiral and shape the rope into a cane shape on an ungreased cookie sheet.
10. Bake 5-7 minutes until lightly browned.
11. Remove from oven and, while still warm, "roll" in a mixture of 1/2 cup crushed candy canes and 1/2 cup sugar.
