Best apple pie ever! Family favorite for every Thanksgiving Holiday.
In a large bowl, stir together sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt. Add apple slices and gently toss till coated. Transfer mixture to a (deep dish preferably) pastry lined pie plate. Top with crumb mixture.
Crumb mixture: Stir together brown sugar, flour and oats. Using a pastry blender (or two forks), cut in 1/2 c. butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
To prevent overbaking, cover edge of pie with foil. Bake 375 for 25 min. Remove foil and bake another 25-30 min. more or until top is golden. Remove from oven and sprinkle with pecans & caramel. Cool on wire rack.
NOTE: If not using a deep dish pie plate, put a cookie sheet on the rack below the pie as it will be full and often overflows slightly which can cause a smoky mess without the cookie sheet.
