Classic ginger cookies.
Mix shortening, sugar, egg, molasses and water thoroughly. Combine flour, salt, soda, ginger, nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon. Stir dru ingredients into wet and blend. Chill dough. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Lightly grease a baking sheet. Drop dough by teaspoonfuls about 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheet. (Cookies will spread slightly during baking.) Bake about 8 minutes or until no imprint remains when lightly touched. Remove from oven. When cookies are slightly warm, frost with creamy icing.
For icing, blend sugar, salt and flavoring. Add cream to make a spreadable consistency. If desired, tint with a few drops of food coloring. Place 1 teaspoon icing on center of each cookie. Spread in a circular motion to cover.
Makes 4 dozen cookies.
