2 cup measuring cup
4 liter jug or larger
Sauce pan
Juicer - I prefer the lever type
Knife
Cutting Board
Zester - I prefer a micro plane
Timer
Strainer
Funnel
Procedure:
First, pour about 3 cups of water into the saucepan with the one cup of sugar. Bring to a boil. Once at a rolling boil, set the timer for 5 min. Pour the remaining 5 cups into the jug.
Now why boil the sugar and water together? Boiling it breaks the sugar down into a simple syrup which tastes sweeter than just straight sugar mixed in cold water.
While that is heating up, zest 2 of the lemons and set the zest aside. Then begin juicing the lemons, on the last lemon make two 1/4" slices and put them in the jug. (looks nice) You should get about 2 cups of juice, now pour that into the jug.
The timer should have gone off by this time. Take the saucepan off of the heat and then put the zest of the two lemons into the sugar water then let it steep for 5 more min. This adds a more "lemony" flavor and color.
After 5 min is up strain the zest from the now yellow sugar water and pour into the jug, I use the strainer and funnel together. Discard the spent zest.
Now add the 1 pound of ice. Why one pound? Because 1 pound of frozen water is 1 pint which equals 2 cups. As an old adage goes, "A pint is a pound the world around".
This will give you a grand total of 2.8L of lemonade. I consider this perfect IMHO. But if you think it's too strong, you can add some water, or if it's not sweet enough you can add more sugar to taste.
Stir and enjoy!
