Place 1 quart milk, sugar and powdered milk in a large pot. place remaining quart milk and vanilla in a large mixing bowl. Cook pot on medium high whisking continually until milk boils.
Add hot milk to mixing bowl. Add yogurt start and whisk to combine. Pour mixture into clean containers but leave lids off and place in cooler or the oven with the light on. Keep between 105-112 degrees as long as possible. culture for 8-15 hours. The longer you leave it to culture the thicker and tangier it gets. Chill 4 hours before eating.
