Saute onion, celery and carrot in olive oil until lightly browned. Add garlic. Cook 1 more minute.
Add herbs, potatoe, vegetables, chicken stock, and tomatoes. Simmer until vegetables are cooked through.
Bring to a boil and simmer for 20 minutes. Add beans to soup.
Cook for 5 more minutes. Remove bay leaf and thyme sprigs.
