Suggest a better descriptionCook the elbow macaroni al dente according to the instructions on the box. While the pasta is cooking, shred the cheese. In a greased (I use Pam spray) 13x9 pan, layer half the macaroni, half the cheese, and repeat. Dot with butter on top of the cheese (I use about a teaspoon every 4 inches or so). Beat egg and milk together and pour evenly over the dish. Salt and pepper the top to taste. Bake at 400 degrees for 30-40 minutes until the top is brown and bubbling.
I use a good quality cheddar cheese (not the cheap store brands) because they tend to not be extremely salty. I usually base how much salt I put on the top with how salty the cheese is.
