The Negroni is a classic Italian cocktail made with equal portions of gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth. There is some argument about whether the Negroni should be shaken or stirred, our preference is to use a nice long stir to let the drink develop a silky texture. A lot of modern recipes have increased the ratio of gin to Campari and sweet vermouth. In our testing, we preferred the classic version that has equal amounts of all three ingredients, because it creates a much more balanced cocktail. As soon as you start adding more gin than Campari and sweet vermouth it becomes too much of a gin drink. When a Negroni is well balanced, you get all the wonderful warm spice flavors from the Campari and sweet vermouth that make it irresistible.
