A must have every Christmas. Mom always uses green and red sugar to decorate them.
In 1/2 quart mixing bowl cream butter and sugars. Add egg, beating well. Add oil and beat until light and fluffy. Occasionall scraping the bottom and sides of bowl.
Sift together flour, soda and tartar, add to first mixture and blend well. Stir in vanilla.
Chill dough for several hours until very firm.
Shape chilled dough into walnut sized balls and place 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet. Dip a buttered cut-crystal glass bottom in colored, granulated sugar and use to flatten each ball.
Bake in a preheated 375 degree oven for 10 minutes.
