In a large frying pan or medium saucepan, combine milk and 1st quantity of sugar. Scald milk. Meanwhile, beat together eggs, cornstarch, and 2nd quantity sugar. When milk is at boiling point, temper egg. Bring back to a boil; remove from heat. Add butter and vanilla, mixing until the butter is completely blended in. Pour in a heatproof container and refrigerate until use.
