Per my mother, this recipe results in a strudel very much like her mother (my grandmother, Frances (Zaitz) Pisciotta) used to make

1. Pour flour into a mixing bowl. Add egg, oil, salt and lukewarm water to make soft dough. Mix well.
2. Place on a floured board and knead 10 minutes, dusting with flour as you go along, until dough doesn't stick and is nice and smooth.
3. Grease a bowl, add dough, grease top of dough. Cover and let rest for 1 hour or more.
4. To stretch the dough, spread a large cloth on a table (and dust) lightly with flour. Place dough in the center and roll into about an 18-inch circle. Slide hands under dough round and pull center of dough gently toward you. Pull and stretch the dough, walking around the table as you do this. Dough should be as thin as tissue paper.
5. Brush melted margarine over entire surface. Spread sliced apples over 2/3 of dough and sprinkle sugar-cinnamon over the apples; then roll up, starting at the end with the apple filling. Coil rolled strudel on a greased baking or pizza pan. Brush top with melted margarine.
6. Bake at 350 (375) deg. for about 1 hour.
7. Optional: Sprinkle confectioner's sugar on top after baking.
Best served warm.
