This is an East Indian dish that's truly marvelous. Serve with steaming hot rice and a green vegetable of your choice with chutney as a condiment.
Cook split peas 20 minutes in water. Add remaining ingredients and simmer an additional 20 minutes. That's it!
I find the peas on their own take a little longer, perhaps an extra 5 minutes. If using coconut flakes (larger shavings, not shredded coconut) place in with the peas at the beginning, because they take awhile to soften.
