In a large pot melt butter on med/high - sauté vegetables (not potatoes) and Ham until onions are translucent and Ham has browned (this includes bone in Ham Steak).
Add liquids, split peas, Bay Leaf, Potatoes and seasoning. Bring soup to a boil and cook on high for 20-30 minutes. Reduce heat and cover stirring occasionally. Cook until desired thickness is achieved (approx. 2 hours).
