Mom's Sugar Cookies
Cream butter, sugar and egg. In separate bowl combine flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar. Add dry ingredients to butter mixture. Form into balls and press with glass dipped in sugar (put a little shortening on bottom of glass). OR: Press with fork dipped in flour to keep from sticking. May also sprinkle with sugar crystals after baked. Bake at 350 for 8 to 10 minutes. May also add 3/4 teaspoon of lemon, almond or vanilla extract.
