This is an easy, crusty, French Bread recipe for your bread machine. It makes a 2 lb. loaf. For diabetics 1 slice/serving is 2 carbs or equal to 2 slices of bread. You can get the bread slicing guide at Wal-Mart for about $10.
jp55-1 ,I wasn’t sure it was gonna work. Add yeast on top of flour?? Yep! Perfect 2 pound loaf of French crunchy! This will be my only from now on. Ps. I used sunflower oil. Yummy!!3w
wilsonkim ,This is a perfect recipe for bread machine French bread. My machine puts the yeast at the top of the machine and doesn't put it in the dough until the right time. I put the dry ingredients in first, then the water and oil on top. My loaf came out great, and is actually the best loaf of bread to come out of my bread machine in years. The dough is just the right amount of chew for authentic French bread. I was so surprised. It is NOT dry at all. I don't understand why anyone thinks this. The crust is crunchy just as would be expected.1y
titogregg ,I read another user's comment about it being dry. As it was mixing I watched it and noticed it was going to be a little dry so I added probably not even an extra 1/3 cup of water and a little bit more oil. So far it looks like it's going to be an ideal loaf for me. Still waiting for it to finish cooking. In my bread machine the whole process takes a little over 4 hours. Between mixing, kneading, rising and cooking.1y
tenacious1 ,Why is the dough so dry after kneading ? I followed your recipe exactly , it hunk you meant 1 1/2 cups of water. Also, you need to do a spellcheck for “liquid” ;) Edit: because it was so dry i added more oil instead of water and it came out good! But I still think 1 1/2 of water would be better for this recipe1y
mitzischafer ,I made this tonight!!. Perfect! yum2y
jennwraspir ,This was a decent recipe. The only problem I had with it was the yeast. It doesn't specify what type of yeast, like fast acting or not. I think that may make a difference in the outcome. My loaf was fine, but it was really dense.2y
archiesharp ,This is the worst recipe. I baked it and followed all of the instructions but it came out burnt on the bottom and raw on the inside. DO NOT USE THIS.2y
andyharris ,Will never make another country white bread again. If we want white we’ll make this one! So good!4y
lizoneill ,I've tried so many recipes and gave up on using my bread machine so many times also! THEN I tried this one! I have to make one every 3 days - that's all my husband wants now!!!4y
shelkindig ,My bread machine doesn’t have a French bread cycle so I did med crust and 3 hours 40 minutes, hope it comes out ok4y
undefined1380 ,This was delicious! Baked perfect on fast cycle. Used rapid rise yeast and it raised very high and used light crust setting. Turned out perfect!4y
angeladunlapframe ,This turned out perfect! Crusty on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. Note: I tried this recipe on the “fast cycle” on my bread machine. DOES NOT WORK. The 4 hour French brad cycle makes a perfect loaf.6y
new-cook-877432 ,Do I take the bread out of the machine before adding the ingredients ?7y
christinewi ,Love this bread! I make two loaves out this recipe instead of one big loaf. Big hit with family and friends!8y
susanblanchard ,Very firm, great for toast, grilled cheese, garlic bread, bruschetta. Or just hot out of the oven is also superb bread8y
lilac123a ,Made this tonight. Incredibly crusty on the outside and light and airy on the inside. I'm in love and will make again.8y
reptocarl ,By far the best French bread I've had. I made only two changes. Two tbs olive oil and an additional one tbs water just because my bread machine always requires more water no matter the recipient. Good stuff Carl9y
lexilou4141 ,This bread is way too dense and the crust is so hard you can barely cut it with a knife!10y
tfowler13 ,A soft, white, crusty loaf that toasts to perfection either in pan or a regular toaster. This bread contains no butter but loves it nevertheless. Butter it liberally before eating. I followed the recipe pretty closely but added a tablespoon of vital wheat gluten as I do with all my breads being one of the fortunate who can enjoy wheat in all forms. I also adapted it to the Zojirushi bread machine by using its long 3:45 cycle with a longer kneading and rising time. I upped the yeast to 2 1/4 teaspoons -- just a little extra. And, as always with the Zo, I looked in during kneading and added a couple of tablespoons of water to make the dough the right thickness to rise. You may find you need more flour one time, more water the next depending on the humidity and the accuracy of your measurements. This is a great loaf. Enjoy.11y
