Best Ham and Bean Soup

Recipes »  Soups, Stews and Chili  »  Beans and Legumes

The best ham and bean soup recipe. Mary Detweiler reports that when she was a cook in a restaurant years ago, this was her best-selling soup. One taste and your family will agree it's a winner!

"I made this today, and got RAVE reviews for it. I've made other ham and bean soups and have never liked how they turned out, but this one is a winner! I didn't put the potatoes or the peas in because I didn't have either item, and I cooked it in a crockpot instead of on the stove top, but I think other than that, I made it the same. Oh, and I used dried navy beans that I soaked overnight instead of canned beans, but that's not a huge difference. If anyone is looking for a good way to use up some ham, this is it!" - HavaLyon

Good soup. It is not very filling, so it's best paired with bread and a salad. I suggest not adding any salt because ham is generally already fairly salty. Also, my husband and I agreed that adding more potatoes, carrots, and celery would make it even better.

My son and husband both liked it, definitely make again!

Have made this twice using left over baked ham. It's simple and delicious. I will be adding this one to the line up.

So GOOD! I have made this a few times now. Always a HIT! Was not bland at all. Be sure to pick a ham steak with the bone, thats reduced sodium if you can find.

Very good soup base, but a little bland. I added salt, cayenne pepper, white pepper, a bay leaf and more garlic. I also added an additional can of beans (which I pureed) to thicken the soup. I used chicken stock instead of broth. With the additions, I will definitely make this again.

Loved this soup! I made a double batch so we can freeze and reheat another time.

Loved it! The peas and parsley really add a nice freshness. I added a bay leaf and mashed the beans and potatoes just a bit because I prefer a little thicker consistency. I used 5 cups of chicken stock and eliminated the water.

Lovely easy soup. Next time I will add more liquid as I prefer a 'soupier' soup.

Out of all of the BigOven recipes I've tried so far, this was my first dud. Just not a lot of flavor to speak of here, even with the extra clove of garlic I added. If making this for the first time, I suggest adding a lot more fresh herbs, like thyme, rosemary, oregano & basil. Go for about 2 tbsp of ALL FOUR. Otherwise this dish is just too bland.

Truly is the best! Loved it! I let it simmer for longer than 30 minutes, though.

Yummy! Used left over ham, un used veggies and cans of beans hiding in the back of the pantry. Easy to substitute.
