The best ham and bean soup recipe. Mary Detweiler reports that when she was a cook in a restaurant years ago, this was her best-selling soup. One taste and your family will agree it's a winner!
"I made this today, and got RAVE reviews for it. I've made other ham and bean soups and have never liked how they turned out, but this one is a winner! I didn't put the potatoes or the peas in because I didn't have either item, and I cooked it in a crockpot instead of on the stove top, but I think other than that, I made it the same. Oh, and I used dried navy beans that I soaked overnight instead of canned beans, but that's not a huge difference. If anyone is looking for a good way to use up some ham, this is it!"- HavaLyon

valopy 8 months agoGood soup. It is not very filling, so it's best paired with bread and a salad. I suggest not adding any salt because ham is generally already fairly salty. Also, my husband and I agreed that adding more potatoes, carrots, and celery would make it even better.
landersk40 8 months agoMy son and husband both liked it, definitely make again!
SCarGo65 9 months agoHave made this twice using left over baked ham. It's simple and delicious. I will be adding this one to the line up.
janelllawyer 9 months agoSo GOOD! I have made this a few times now. Always a HIT! Was not bland at all. Be sure to pick a ham steak with the bone, thats reduced sodium if you can find.
mogriff1 9 months agoVery good soup base, but a little bland. I added salt, cayenne pepper, white pepper, a bay leaf and more garlic. I also added an additional can of beans (which I pureed) to thicken the soup. I used chicken stock instead of broth. With the additions, I will definitely make this again.

Mschmid 11 month agoLoved this soup! I made a double batch so we can freeze and reheat another time.
amyelizabeth1 11 month agoLoved it! The peas and parsley really add a nice freshness. I added a bay leaf and mashed the beans and potatoes just a bit because I prefer a little thicker consistency. I used 5 cups of chicken stock and eliminated the water.
Dmb2ber 11 month agoFantastic recipe. I put mine over fresh cornbread and it was so good.
Fiece 11 month agoLovely easy soup. Next time I will add more liquid as I prefer a 'soupier' soup.

daniellehancock 1 year agoOut of all of the BigOven recipes I've tried so far, this was my first dud. Just not a lot of flavor to speak of here, even with the extra clove of garlic I added. If making this for the first time, I suggest adding a lot more fresh herbs, like thyme, rosemary, oregano & basil. Go for about 2 tbsp of ALL FOUR. Otherwise this dish is just too bland.
christinebakke 1 year agoTruly is the best! Loved it! I let it simmer for longer than 30 minutes, though.
Kimmacc 1 year agoYummy! Used left over ham, un used veggies and cans of beans hiding in the back of the pantry. Easy to substitute.
