My maternal grandmother made several different types of potato salad, each specific to different occasions. This wonderful creamy version was the potato salad she always made to accompany her Sloppy Joes. She would vary the recipe slightly from time to time. She would sometimes use mayo, other times salad dressing. And even though she usually used a sweet pickle, she also sometimes used a dill pickle. I'm not sure if it was a matter of taste or simply what was available in the fridge. Our family always enjoyed whichever tasty version she made, but my favorite was with Hellmann's mayonnaise and a sweet pickle.

fuchsr ,Very nice. Not much of a potato salad person myself but I liked it and it found the approval of my wife who is more of a potato salad lover. I doubled the number of pickles and pickle juice and cut back on the eggs. Used mayo as I found the idea of using store-bought salad dressing not much appealing. Went very well as a side dish for New Year's Ev supper.6y
mississippimule ,I love Steve's grandmother's receipts. I tried the potato salad with mayonnaise and Sour cream with sweet Pickle and it was really good. I will definitely try this one again. I am still cooking her chili and love it!! Thanks for sharing.10y
je_suis_belle85 ,Amazing!!! Nice and creamy! I substituted olives, bell peppers, and a half teaspoon of dill seasoning in place of the pickle and it still turned out great!11y
tmom7159 ,Sgrishka, you have done it again! =) This potato salad is the best I have ever made or tasted! My husband loves pepper so I substituted ground black pepper for the white. I "goofed" and peeled the potatoes before boiling, but it didn't matter. I used 1/2 tsp of yellow & 1/2 Dijon mustard. I added onions, celery, bacon, dill weed, & celery seed after tasting the base because I love those things in my potato salad, but it wasn't necessary: it was superb on its own!!! Thanks again for an awesome recipe!!!11y
okieamy ,I have now made this twice. First time with salad dressing and sweet pickles second time with mayo and dill pickles. Can't pick a favorite.12y

gab2gin ,Used relish instead of hunting down a pickle. This dish was a hit over the holidays.12y
kitschykitchen ,Loved this creamy potato salad! Preparation takes some time but is worth the effort in the end result. Love me some good potato salad in the summertime...12y
boatingfun ,This really is the best potato salad, I've never really been a fan until now. I add a little radish and some cucumber if I have it for a little extra flavor and crunch. Making it for a cookout tomorrow I'm sure it will be gone. Thanks for the recipe12y
jmschaub ,I made it with Helmanns Olive Oil Mayo plus Dill Pickles. Tastes very good. I will have to try some of the other variations though.12y
herbgreen ,Potato salad either tastes good, or it doesn't. There's not much in-between. This is good. I'm not real fond of sweet pickles, but potato salad without them just does not taste right (to me). Wifey chopped them up extra fine, she made this dish. We both loved it.14y
divalicious ,With this recipe, now I am convinced that your family must be from Virginia. The sweet pickles, salad dressing, light mustard, and paprika are a dead give away. Just reading it I know what this recipe tastes like and I can tell you it is GOOD.14y
