Preheat oven to 375*. In a large mixing bowl, combine apples, bread cubes, syrup, and 1/2 cup of sugar and mix well. Place in a buttered 8" baking dish.
In a medium-sized bowl, combine flour, 1/2 cup of sugar, butter, nutmeg and cinnamon, cutting it together with two knives to achieve a moist, mealy consistency. Sprinkle over the top of the apple mixture and dot with butter. Bake for 45 minutes or until the top is golden brown. Serve with unsweetened whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
