This recipe Grandma Mary (Larson) made for every birthday! Her secret (as told to Carmen) was to freeze the cake for 2 to 3 days before serving!
Bring to boil the first 3 ingredients
In a separate bowl mix the next 3 ingredients
In a large bowl mix the last 3 ingredients
Combine cocoa, butter & water (1st three) into flour.
Combine sour cream, eggs & baking soda (2nd three) into flour.
Mix well.
Pour into prepared sheet pan & bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes
FROSTING:
Bring to a light boil: 1 stick of butter, 4 tablespoons cocoa, 6 tablespoons milk
Beat into: 1 pound powdered sugar & 1/2 teaspoon vanilla or almond flavoring
Spread on CAKE WHILE CAKE IS HOT
You MUST add the ingredients to the flour in the correct order or you will have scrambled eggs!
Always freeze after cooling for a day or two before serving. It makes for a very rich and moist cake.
