Suggest a better descriptionPrepare all produce. Placed tomatoes in a medium bowl. Crush them into small pieces using your hands or a blender/food processor.
Heat a large drizzle of oil in a medium pot over medium-high heat. Add onion and both peppers. Cook, stirring occasionally until just softened.
Stir taco seasoning, cumin, sugar, and chili powder into the pot. Cook, stirring, until fragrant. Season with salt and pepper. Stir in tomatoes, black beans with liquid, 1/2 cup water, and chopped tortillas (or crushed tortilla chips). Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened, about 20 minutes.
Combine sour cream, hot sauce to your liking, and lime juice. Season with salt and pepper.
Once chili is done, check and add a splash of water if it is too thick. Top with cheese and crema. Serve with chips and lime wedges, if desired.
