Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add yolks one at a time.Add vanilla and mix well. Sift flour, salt and baking soda. Add alternately with buttermilk to butter mixture and mix until smooth. Fold in egg whites. Pour into 3 nine inch layer pans that have been greased and floured. Bake at 350 for 30-40 minutes. Cool before frosting.
Frosting: Mix all together and frost the cake.
