Best German chocolate cake & frosting.
Cake:
Combine chopped chocolate and 1/2 c water, microwave for 1 minute; set aside to cool. Beat sugar and shortening in mixer until fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla; beat on low spread 1 minute. Beat in chocolate mixture on low. Add flour, salt and baking soda (combined) alternately with buttermilk to chocolate mixture. Bake in 2 greased and floured 9" cake pans for 30-35 minutes at 350. Cool.
Frosting:
Stir milk, sugar, butter, egg yolks, and vanilla in large saucepan. Stirring constantly, cook on medium heat 12 minutes or until thickened and golden brown. Remove from heat. Stir in coconut and pecans. Cool to room temperature.
Frost tops of layers when both cake and frosting are cool.
