This spaghetti recipe evolved over time, but is a frequent option at family birthday dinners. This recipe makes a very large batch. I usually freeze leftovers in individual containers for "quick and easy" dinners later, simply warm and boil pasta.
Saute onions in olive oil until soft. Add italian sausage cut into small chunks and cook until brown. Add ground beef and brown. Add all remaining ingredients, bring to a boil and turn down and simmer for at least an hour, longer is better. Stir occasionally, taste and adjust spices as necessary. Don't leave out sugar or Madeira, this is the "secret" to sauce that tastes Italian.
Bring water to a boil, add salt and pasta. Cook until al dente. Serve with grated Parmesan for topping.
I usually serve with broiled garlic Parmesan bread. Mix 1 T chopped garlic in 3T melted butter, spread over sourdough bread loaf (cut in half). Top with grated Parmesan and toast under med-hi broiler. Watch it carefully. It'll burn!
