Ready in 45 minutes
Excellent served with biscuits (or cornbread), greens (collards are my favorite), and vegetarian baked beans (or lima beans and corn cooked in butter with a little salt and pepper). In addition to being tasty right out of the oven, this makes an excellent lunch the next day (hot or cold), though you might have to hide some in advance if you want any left over! Keeps nicely in the fridge for up to a week (at least I think it will - it's never lasted that long in our house, even with only two people).
"I baked the tofu for 1 hour turning every 15 minutes and some of the smaller pieces got a little crunchy which was ok. My husband and I loved this dish though and even he said we could have this again. I did cut it in half and it made enough for 4 sandwiches on hamburger buns. I would recommend it highly."- abakergirl714

Top-ranked recipe named "Memphis-Style Barbecue Tofu"
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Cut one of the blocks of tofu into bite-sized cubes (about the size of dice), and crumble the other block of tofu into small chunks (bite-sized and smaller). Place the tofu in a lightly oiled baking dish (large enough so that you only have one layer). Cook until tofu is lightly browned and slightly chewy, tossing every 15 minutes or so (it should take about an hour or two to cook the tofu properly).
While the tofu is cooking, prepare the sauce: In a saucepan, slowly saute the chopped onion in butter until soft and just beginning to turn yellow. Add remaining ingredients. Simmer about 15 minutes. Taste, and adjust seasonings.
Combine sauce and tofu in a baking dish, and bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes (note that this is about how long it takes to bake biscuits to go with the barbecue tofu).

trevalr 1 year agoThis was a hit. Made it vegan. Next time I will use a little less smoke because it had a bit too much vinegar taste
jopacaco 1 year agoMy family really liked this recipe. Cooking the tofu this way gives it a really nice texture. I will most definitely make this dish again.
angel99216 1 year agoThe sauce is excellent . But it takes to long for such a plain dinner

JessieEK 2 years agoThe sauce was sweet and thick and my husband LOVED it. He used the leftovers to make a BBQ sandwich for the next day's lunch. I really love the tofu cooking process though - what a great base for lots of things. Great side recommendations, too!! :)
Petscanner 2 years agoThis recipe is making my mouth water...yum. It seems to be easy, just a bit time consuming, but if it tastes great....WHO CARES? I can't wait to test this meal.
mamakitchen 3 years agoAwesome! The BBQ recipe itself is really good and can be used on chicken as well. I'll make it again for dinner!
coolie11 3 years agonot sure if this worked properly the sauce was great but way too much for the tofu and my tofu was dry and tough? oven too high? 1st time we've tried tofu so hope its cook error
tmgux 3 years agoThis was unbelievable! As a recently converted vegetarian, I have been missing out at bbqs. Not anymore! The sauce is so incredible, I plan on making a double batch next time.
Zeissg 3 years agoGreat, but one thing - the serving sizes are a bit small given that the tofu dries in the browning process.
anastacie 3 years agoMy spouse asked "really, where did you buy this barbecue sauce?" This is an amazing way to cook tofu and will become a regular in my dinner rotation, especially when I have guests over in the summer.

nzinga1 4 years agoThis dish was absolutely succulent. My son, who loves tofu, enjoyed this dish completely. I was actually able to use 3 packs of tofu and had enough sauce. I added a little extra red pepper to give it a little kick. Delicious!!!
jlautner 5 years agoI stirred the tofu every fifteen minutes and cooked it a bit over an hour altogether. That seemed perfect. I made a lot of substitutions because I didn't have all of the ingredients but I stayed with the type food listed, and it was delicious. I couldn't find a simple chili sauce or liquid smoke so I went with a bit of hot sauce and some chipotle chiles (dried seeds). It's a flexible dish that can be made ahead of time and reheated. I reheated it in the oven the first time, then in the microwave for the leftovers. I hesitated to use two tubs of tofu but I am glad I did. The tofu shrinks some in cooking and you're going to want leftovers anyway. I served it over noodles with fresh steamed green beans. It was a nice combination.
