I found this in an older cookbook and, of course, I had to slightly modify it. It's a spiced chocolate cake made all the better with rum soaked raisins. You can add nuts but that's a personal choice.
Soak raisins in rum until plump. You can use any rum but since a big part of this cake is about the spices I recommend spiced rum.
Drain the raisins.
Preheat oven to 350F.
Prepare a 9x13 cake pan by greasing and flouring.
Sift together flour, cocoa, baking soda, salt, and spices.
Cream shortening and sugar.
Add eggs one at a time beating well.
Add sifted mixture and applesauce to creamed mixture in 3 alternating additions of dry and liquid.
Add raisins.
Pour batter into prepared pan.
Bake about 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into center of cake comes out clean.
