Sift flour, spices, and salt.
To half of this mixture add the gumdrops, raisins, and nuts mixing well.
Cream shortening and add sugar gradually, creaming well.
Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Dissolve baking soda in hot water.
Add the remaining half of the dry ingredients alternately with applesauce and baking soda mixture stirring well.
Stir in the floured gumdrops, raisins, and nuts blending thoroughly.
Pour into 2 greased loaf pans(9 1/3 by 5 1/4) lined with wax paper.
Bake in low oven 300 degrees for about 2 hours.
Mom’s note:
I make mine around thanksgiving, wrap well in glad wrap and store in Tupperware.
