Our favorite lasagna recipe. I took the best part of multiple recipes and came up with this one. The sauce is the best part!
Sweat onions in a large pot with olive oil. Add sausage and ground beef and brown. Add garlic for 1 minute then tomato paste, tomato sauce, crushed tomatoes and beef broth. Stir and bring to a simmer. Add sugar, fennel, basil, 1/2 of the parsley, salt, seasoning, and pepper. Stir gently, cover, and let simmer on low for 1-1/2 hours.
In a separate bowl: add ricotta/cottage cheese, nutmeg, egg, and the other 1/2 of the parsley and mix.
Assemble in a lasagna pan as follows: Sauce, noodles, 1/2 ricotta/cottage cheese mixture, 1/2 of the mozzarella, 1/2 of the Parmesan. Then repeat. the last layer should be sauce then sprinkle with cheese.
Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes covered, then 25 minutes uncovered. Let rest 15 minutes.
Making your own lasagna noodles is the best way to make this!
