Family recipe from Aroostook County, Maine.
Preheat oven to 350.
Beat egg whites until stiff. Set aside.
Cream together sugar and shortening. Add lemon extract.
Sift together flour, baking soda and cream of tartar. Add to shortening mix alternately with milk.
Stir in chopped nuts.
Fold in egg whites.
Turn into a greased 9x13 pan and bake at 350 for approximately 45 minutes.
Cool completely and frost with lemon buttercream frosting. Top with walnut halves.
