A flavorful chicken dish named after Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Louisiana

This was a copycat recipe I found & modified of the Bourbon Chicken sold in most Chinese take-outs; which rarely use bourbon as a component. It's wonderfully sweet & spicy without being too hot.

Original recipe makes 4 Servings
2 poundsboneless chicken breasts; cut into bite-size pieces
1 tablespoonolive oil; (1-2)
1 garlic clove; crushed
1/4 teaspoonginger
3/4 teaspooncrushed red pepper flakes
1/4 cupapple juice
1/3 cuplight brown sugar
2 tablespoonsketchup
1 tablespooncider vinegar
1/2 cupwater
1/3 cupsoy sauce
1 tablespooncornstarch; (if thick sauce desired)

Bourbon Street Chicken Preparation

Heat oil in a large skillet.

Add chicken pieces and cook until lightly browned.

Remove chicken.

Add remaining ingredients, heating over medium heat until well blended and dissolved.

Add chicken and bring to a hard boil.

Reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes uncovered.

Serve over hot rice.

Notes

I also like to mix about 1 teaspoon of Sriracha sauce (found in the asian food section of the grocery store) in with the ketchup for additional heat. Do it if you like it spicey!

My younger kids thought it was too spicy but the rest of us thought it was excellent! It reminded me more of general tso chicken, maybe with less red pepper it would have been more like the bourbon chicken I'm used to. I used the cornstarch and it gave it the perfect texture. Will definitely make it again with no changes!

We really like this recipe. I used lean chicken thighs instead of chicken breast and it turned out great. Also, didn't have any apple juice and I thought it was plenty sweet with out it.

Made again today with a few changes; I upped the cider vinegar to 1/4 cup (I love that cider vinegar), and I made double the recommended sauce. This gave everyone plenty of sauce for their rice:)

It was a bit too liquid @ 20 minutes cooking time so I added another 10 minutes. We served it over brown rice and green beans on the side. It was great! This is a keeper in the regular rotation.

I Love this one. I served it over mixed stir fry veggies instead of rice, and I didn't have apple juice so I doubled the vinegar and added an extra tablespoon of brown sugar. Delicious!

I thought it was great. My family loved it. I did double the recipe and I added 1/2 cup JD whiskey to it. I am a weakling with heat so next time I think I will lessen the red pepper by a lot.
